Data centres have asked Alberta's grid for 22 times what it can spare, and the way around it runs into the regulator and the county

Data-centre requests on AESO's connection list reached 26.8 GW in October 2026 against the same 1,200 MW release, still held by two projects, and in August the utilities regulator refused a 1.4 GW gas plant built to go around the grid.

The number of Albertans going without care held flat while the province grew, so the rate fell

Alberta's unmet-needs count held flat between 331,200 and 344,900 from 2022 to 2024 while the population aged 15 and over grew 9.5%, so the rate fell; the boom behind that growth added more people in a year than any other since 1952, but not at a record rate.
